NJ Studio for bijenkorf x tess van zalinge
For the 150th anniversary of the Dutch department store de Bijenkorf, Tess creates a ‘droit devant’ unique design. To celebrate crafts, to share historical storytelling and to visualize deformations in modern design. Inspired by Bijenkorf’s corset from 1912, the first-ever sold corset in their store, and the different deformations that the corset has brought to the body over the years. The female body was constantly formed into unnatural volumes, these extremes and sometimes contrasting silhouettes are brought together as one. As part of the travelling exhibition called 'in de maak', twelve designers were commissioned by the Bijenkorf and travelled with their uniquely developed designs to all the department stores throughout the Netherlands.

Tess van Zalinge represents with her traditional yet playful embroideries, the evolution from chained parrots to the flowers that replaced the colourful macaws, grey parrots and cockatoos. The design of the metal mobiles reflects movement, wind and nature. They are developed in collaboration with Artis' traditional smiths.
