"For years Artis welcomed its visitors in the beautiful and colourful parrot lane. I wanted to take you back in time and by this historical walk through the lane tell the story of the parrot and his escape to freedom." - Tess van Zalinge
MOAM selected, in collaboration with ARTIS, eighteen artists from a variety of disciplines. These artists got to have a peek behind the scenes and immersed themselves in the nature, history and heritage of the park. After that each of them developed a special work of art, inspired by the flora and fauna as well as the history of the park.
With her traditional yet playful embroideries Tess van Zalinge presents an evolution; from chained parrots to the flowers that replaced the colourful macaws, grey parrots and cockatoos.
Her design of the metal mobiles reflects movement, wind and nature and are developed in collaboration with Artis’ smiths. Inspired by the richly coloured flora and fauna that once flanked the lane, Tess brings the colour back to this monument.
The project is supported by Small Acts of Love, het Prins Bernard Cultuurfonds, Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunsten, Unilever en Douwe Egberts.
